Linux

Red Hat Establishes Fedora Mirror Site in China
Site provides local Linux community with an open platform to participate in open source development projects

August 17, 2005, Beijing, China - Red Hat (NASDAQ: RHAT), the world's leading provider of open source solutions to the enterprise, announced today the establishment of its Fedora mirror site in China. As local Fedora mirror site in the China, www.fedoraproject.org.cn, provides local Linux communities with an open platform to participate and contribute to the building of the open source operating system.

The local Fedora site will release Fedora Core, concurrently with global release, to China Linux community, who can use these codes and programs in developing open source solutions.

The Fedora Project is an openly-developed project designed by Red Hat, for general participation, and led by a meritocracy. The goal of the Fedora Project is to work with the Linux community to build a complete, general-purpose operating system exclusive from open source software. Currently, over 20 Fedora sites are established around the world, including Japan, Korea, Singapore and German.

"Fedora opens up a full development process, in which developers and users in local community enjoy participating in project development worldwide", said Mr. Steve McWhirter, Vice President, Red Hat Asia Pacific, "I believe Fedora China site will become an active and integral part of the global network."

Compared to an average 12-18 months of release interval of other open source solutions such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora speeds up the development process with an interval of 4-6 months, taking better advantage of the inherent strengths of the open source model.

"There is no denying that Fedora embodies the open source spirit, it will definitely bridge the gap between global and local open source/Linux communities", said Professor Yuan Meng, Deputy Secretary General of China OSS Promotion Union, "Developed by the Linux community and for the Linux community, this will ultimately benefit Chinese Linux users and propel the development of China's Linux industry."

Via www.fedoraproject.org.cn, with Chinese interface, local Linux community users can:

* Participate in development of open source software
* Experiment with the technology
* Help others in the community
* Advocate Open Source, Linux
* Educate students

Red Hat's Fedora website will also serve as an online platform for webniars and campaigns focused on open source technology.

"Fedora allows us to develop and grow the latest and greatest technologies which are incorporated into our later products such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux," said Mr. Michael Chen, General Manager of Red Hat Greater China, "Fedora is a technology effort we are proud to bring into China because its serves the community and is an effective communication platform between Red Hat and Chinese Linux users."

  Linux

I've said this before and I'll say it again:

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

The fact is that the Chinese organization runs, as near as I can tell,
completely autonomously. They wanted to have a local mirror, so they
created one. It's not the prettiest thing in the world, to be sure, but
it does the job -- by (a) putting up a local mirror, and (b) linking back
to the authoritative content at fp.o with *every other link*.

We're trying to get in touch with the Chinese folks to understand what
their plans are.

My first thought is that we need a Chinese CMC.

Hi

Now, I have a few questions:

1. was RH ever going to ask/consult/tell us about
fedoraproject.org.cn /before/ its inception?

I find this lack of communication not positive

Agreed.

2. Is the content there going to be localised? Last I checked, RH
Beijing was hiring ~80 staff (earlier this year), so how important is
RHEL/Fedora there?

>3. Competition from Sun Wah Linux and Red Flag linux (I think they're

now a fedora/chinese spinoff) is rife. Thoughts?

Not many ideas but I will share some information. Miracle Corporation (Japan) , Red Flag (China) and Haansoft (Korea) have formed http://asianux.com. Its a Red Hat Enterprise Linux spinoff with a heavily themed Anaconda and a general Windows like look and feel. These along with Turbolinux seem to be popular in this region. SCIM input method ( in rawhide) with a strong native language support should put Fedora on par

update:
为什么 unix/linux 那么好,因为快啊。

7-11 owner buying big department store
Deal to create Asia's No. 1 retailer meant to exploit economic growth, thwart Wal-Mart, others.

7-11's parent company is buying a Japanese department store chain in a deal that will make it Asia's biggest retailer.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Seven & I Holdings Co., the owner of 7-11 stores, said Monday it will buy the Japanese department store Millennium Retailing Inc. in a deal worth as much as $2.15 billion.

Seven & I, a holding company that also owns the Ito-Yokado supermarket chain, aims to become globally competitive through the deal, which will push it past Aeon Co. and make it Asia's biggest retailer by sales.

The company, which also has U.S.-based 7-Eleven Inc. under its umbrella, aims to jump-start its growth with department stores that have been benefiting from improvement in Japan's economy, while the outlook for general merchandise and convenience stores remains gloomy due to market saturation.

Seven & I's move also coincides with foreign rivals' attempts to gain further footholds in Japan's already crowded retail sector.

Competition in the industry intensified this month when Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (Research), the world's largest retailer, took a controlling stake in Seiyu Ltd., the country's No. 4 supermarket chain.

"As we value what each one of us have, we want to create a new (retailing) model through our merger," Seven & I Chairman Toshifumi Suzuki told a news conference.

Suzuki said he had high hopes for Millennium President Shigeaki Wada's skill in differentiating his company from other department stores, which he said was needed to win in a saturated retail market. Wada will become Seven & I's vice president in May.

Seven & I said it would pay 131 billion yen (about $1.1 billion) in cash for a 65.45 percent stake in privately held Millennium from Nomura Principal Finance, a unit of Nomura Holdings Inc., in January.

It plans to acquire the remaining shares with cash or stock by next June to make Millennium, the parent company of Japan's Seibu and Sogo department stores, a wholly owned unit.

Nomura Principal, which bought the Millennium stake for 50 billion yen, said the sale would produce a profit of 81.1 billion yen, its biggest-ever profit from an investment. Its parent, Nomura Holdings, does not provide earnings forecasts.
Cash rich

Analysts see the planned takeover as positive for Seven & I, and say it will not hurt the cash-rich company's financial health. But they were awaiting a detailed plan to see if its strategy of having multiple business formats will produce any significant synergies.

Seven & I, a holding company created last September, has lacked major department store operations.

"Judging from the acquisition price and possible synergies in the consumer finance business and others, we view this merger positively at this point," Toshio Takahashi, an analyst at Mizuho Securities, said in a report.

Millennium, which has a total of 30 department stores, expects sales of 935 billion yen in the current year to February. That would bring total expected sales at the combined entity to 4.6 trillion yen, 5 percent more than Aeon in 2005/06.

After buying 50 million Millennium shares from Nomura at 2,622 yen per share, Seven & I will pay the same amount to buy the remaining shares from Millennium shareholders who accept its offer. This would make the takeover value about 200 billion yen ($1.72 billion).

However, if no shareholders except Nomura agree to its cash offer, Seven & I will swap each Millennium share for 0.61 share in the holding company. In this case, up to 24.181 million Seven & I shares will be needed to acquire the remaining 34.55 percent stake in Millennium, Seven & I said.

That would bring the total cost of the takeover to nearly 250 billion yen ($2.15 billion), based on Seven & I's closing share price on Monday.

After the announcement, Seven & I soared by its daily limit of 11.3 percent to close at 4,910 yen. The stock also pushed up the retail sector index 4.3 percent.

The Nikkei average closed up 1 percent.
